Covered Wagon style china doll antique

Here is an unusually large and beautiful china head doll, 29 inches tall, with a shoulder head fully 8 inches high. Even though her shoulders piece was broken in many pieces and glued back well, she remains a striking and delightful personality. Her covered wagon hair style sets her apart from more common chinas, and is a desirable one for collectors. This head was made by the German doll maker J D Kestner about 1855. Dressed and wearing her necklace, the damage is visible for a close look, but not prominent. The china has a light pink tint, and is finest quality.

The body was made by me, using purchased leather arms. The unders are included. Made for her by a friend, but heavily antiqued they may be used as is, or serve as a pattern for others. This is a gorgeous doll and one you will seldom see in this size. I have seen one more, in many many years of collecting and watching them sell. Milliner's doll, papier mache TLC

Here is a charming morsel, about 10 inches tall to the bottom of her petticoat. The papier mache doll head is mounted on the correct and original leather body, and retains her own chemise and petticoat. Both arms and legs are gone and should be replaced. The head has crazing and a rough forehead possibly retouched. Her features are clear and untouched. The main problem I see is the legs have been wrongly replaced with stumpy short ones of a poor shape. I think any attempt to remove these from the delicate white kid body would tear it to shreds. It may be possible to gently saw off the feet and make longer legs with papier clay, or the feet can be retained as is and the long clothes of the doll will cover that problem. Motschmann doll TLC

These bright eyed babies from Germany through the 1860's hold a certain fascination for me. They have an uncanny lifelike quality. The segmented body of papier mache, wood and cloth is different from most doll's. The doll pictured here needs to go to someone who is comfortable making missing parts with clay, such as LaDoll or papier clay or the like. The torso has become separated but is not broken, just needs to be rejoined. Both little bare feet need to be replaced and glued in place, although they once swiveled, that is not necessary now. new arms need to be added. I strongly feel that the head should be left just as it is in original wax. There is a scuff to his nose, and an ear, and a cheek, but it is preferable to leave the character of an antique. An adorable doll who looks at me with great presence he is about 19 inches long. This doll would like to have an ecru crocheted bonnet and a long dress of a civil war era print. Replaced hands and feet would be barely seen and the focus will be on the wonderful expression.
